THE SHE WOLF OF FRANCE/REACTION ON THE COMMENTS
OF KATHRYN WARNER/EDWARDTHE SECONDBLOGSPOT
UPDATE
Kathryn Warner has, in my view a great factual knowledge
of the Edward II period [first half of the fourteenth century] but
sometimes a poor insight in the historical events or human reactions, as shows itself in her comments on ”the She Wolf
of France”
Her arguments often lack  historical depth.
By the way, Kathryn Warner deleted my comment……
Silly, in those Internet times…………..
TO MY READERS
INTRODUCTION
As you will see, I’ll give a reaction on the comments of
Kathryn Warner, historian and writer of among else
”Edward II, an Unconventional King” and
”Isabella of France” [wife of Edward II].
Actually, she reacted on an historical fiction novel
”She Wolf of France”, about Isabella of France, fifth
in a series about the French Royal House in the first half
of the fourteenth century ”The Accursed Kings”, referring
to the ”curse of the Templars”
[See under Philip IV]
Below you will see her post [on her website] as my comment.
But I realized, that you only can follow the discussion, when you
know something of the background.
So underlying you find information about Isabella of
France and her father, King Philip IV
But who knows already a lot about the French and English history in
the beginning of the 14th century, in casu the history of Isabella of
France and her father, King Philip IV, can skip this information
and go directly to

[EdwardthesecondBlogspot]/Philip IV of France/29 november 1314: Death of Philip IV of France

29 NOVEMBER 1314: DEATH OF PHILIP IV OF FRANCE
To my readers:
FOREWORD AND BACKGROUND:
Since the French King Philip IV is seen on the Edward II Blogspot,
hereby some information about
the relation between the French King  Philip IV [Philip The Fair] and the English King Edward II
And by the way:
It was because the succeeding sons of Philip IV had no male heirs,
the Hundred Years war between England and France was sparked:
The relation:
King Philip IV was the father in law of King Edward II, since
his daughter Isabella of France [mother of the later King Edward III]
was married off [by her father Philip IV] to Edward II
SPARKING THE HUNDRED YEARS WAR/THE SALIC LAWS IN
FRANCE AND THE ENGLISH CLAIM TO THE FRENCH THRONE:
After the death of King Charles IV, the last surviving son of king Philip IV
and the uncle of Edward III [whose mother was the sister to Charles IV],
Edward III’s mother Isabella of France [the English Queen Isabella] claimed
the French throne for her son Edward III, being the closest relative
[nephew] of the late king Charles IV.
However, apart from the fact, the French nobility would never applaud
an English king ruling over France, Edward III could not inherit the French throne
anyway,
since in France, Salic laws [the right of succession, which exclude females]
were passed in 1316 by King Philip V [predecessor of King Charles IV]
And Edward only could would inherit the French throne by his mother Isabella
[being the daughter of Philip IV and sister to Philip V and Charles IV]
See for the background of the introduction of the Salic laws, based originally
on the  adultery of the French princesses in the Tour de Nesle Affair in 1317
Tour de Nesle Affair
Ironic however for King Philip V:
That King Philip V, who introduced the Salic Laws, of course thought his infant son would thus succeed him.
But his infant son died, he had only daughters left and they could not
inherit the throne………..
HUNDRED YEARS WAR ANYWAY
After denouncing the claim of Queen Isabella on the French throne
for her son Edward III, at first Edward III seemed to accept it,
But by various political causes,Edward III claimed the French throne again, it was of course
rejected by the French [who then had King Philip VI, the first Valois King, the son of
the brother of King Philip IV and thus a cousin of the late King Charles IV]
in 1337 the war broke out
See for the Hundred Years War
AND NOW BACK TO KING PHILIP IV

A Royal Adultery Scandal In 1314

Edward II’s queen Isabella of France, then eighteen years old, visited her homeland in March/April 1314 to petition her father Philip IV on some matters concerning her husband’s duchy of Gascony. Isabella arrived in Paris on 16 March 1314, the day after her father had Jacques de Molay, Grand Master of the Knights Templar, and his deputy Geoffrey de Charnay burned alive on an island in the middle of the River Seine.  The queen returned to England in late April 1314, just after Edward II’s thirtieth birthday.

MORE NONSENS ABOUT ISOBEL AND ANNE NEVILLE

SEE WEBSITE NEVILLFEAST

I stumbled on this while I was on the hunt for information for an upcoming post.

I feel that it needs a response, something to balance the books a little. I know, it’s an uphill battle – the view that poor Isobel and Anne were mere pawns (oh, and Doomed) is so entrenched that it’s going to take a miracle to shift it by so much as a millimetre.

The Wars of the Roses/[NevillFeast]/Anne Beauchamp, Countess of Warwick, wife and widow

ANNE BEAUCHAMP, COUNTESS OF WARWICK, WIFE AND WIDOW
SEE WEBSITE OF NEVILLFEAST
Posted: April 13, 2011 in Anne Beauchamp, Countess of Warwick

I want to look in some depth at a letter written by Anne Beauchamp, countess of Warwick, to the Commons after the Battle of Barnet. She wrote other letters, to several of the ‘ladies noble of this realm’. I haven’t been able to find any of them, but they probably don’t say much that isn’t said in the one I do have. What would be interesting to see would be any difference in tone. This is a formal letter, written to a formal government body. Anne had, by this stage, reached the end of the list of people (or bodies) she could appeal to. I get a strong sense of the woman herself from this letter. Anne knows her rights and knows they’re being violated. The decision taken by parliament to disinherit (impoverish) her, must have been extremely hard for her to take, especially as it was her daughters and sons-in-law who benefitted from it. I can’t help but think she felt betrayed by them.

THE KING’S MOTHER IN LAW:
ANNE BEAUCHAMP, COUNTESS OF WARWICK
BY SUSAN HIGGINBOTHAM

Wife to a kingmaker and mother to a queen, Anne Beauchamp, Countess of Warwick, is nonetheless one of the more shadowy figures caught up in the Wars of the Roses. Yet her life intersected with those of the most powerful men of the time, and her wealth would be much desired by some of those men.

[EdwardthesecondBlogspot]/Roger Mortimer’s grandchildren

I did a genealogical post recently about Henry of Lancaster’s grandchildren which seemed to go down rather well, and here’s one about some of the grandchildren of Roger Mortimer, lord of Wigmore and first earl of March (25 April 1287 – 29 November 1330) and Joan Geneville (2 February 1286 – 19 October 1356).  The couple married in 1301 and had four sons and eight daughters (see Ian Mortimer’s The Greatest Traitorfor more info): Edmund (the eldest son and Roger’s heir), Roger, Geoffrey, John, Margaret (the eldest daughter), Isabella, Joan, Maud, Agnes, Katherine, Beatrice and Blanche.  Talking of the latter, here andhere are pics of Blanche’s stunning effigy in Much Marcle, Herefordshire.  Please take a moment to have a look.  Isn’t she beautiful?  Look at the way her gown is made to spill over the edge of the tomb, her hands clutching a rosary, her tight-fitting gown and head-dress in the style of the mid-fourteenth century.  Stunning.  And here is the effigy of Blanche’s sister Katherine and her husband the earl of Warwick, in Warwick.
